How To Repair A Lawn By Seeding

How To Repair A Lawn By Seeding

Before repairing a lawn with seeds, choose the type of lawn renewal –new seeds or new vegetation cover – depending on the degree of damage. If less than 40% of the grass is lost, it will be enough to sow new seeds.

Why do you need to repair the lawn? Try to find out why your lawn has withered. On this depends which seeds to choose and the procedure of how to repair a damaged lawn.

Estimate the scope of the works you need to do. Before starting to work, try to estimate how much work is to be done. Will you need an aerator? Will be a seed drill necessary? Will you need the help of a professional to perform some of the work?

There are two different ways to repair the lawn:

  • By adding new seeds from scratch;
  • Using a new grass cover.

If more than 40% of grass is ruined, the best way to repair a patchy lawn is to apply a new grass cover. If less than 40% of the lawn is destroyed or ruined by weeds, you can resort to reseeding, i.e. supplementing new seeds to the existing grass. It would be enough.

Before restoring the lawn, it is recommended to test the soil. To do this, take a small amount of soil and send it to the laboratory. Many landowners don’t do this simply because they do not know about it. Others refuse to conduct testing because of its cost. In fact, starting a lawn repair with soil testing is the most reliable solution.

If you don’t analyze the soil, you’ll never know what is lacking to improve it. You can apply fertilizers again and again but you’ll not get any results. The testing of the soil will show you what to do and what to avoid.

The method of testing differs in different countries of the world. As a rule, it is conducted in commercial laboratories. The laboratory will develop a detailed action plan for you that will help understand how to fix the lawn or a bad yard in the most effective way.

Determine The Time Of Work

Typically, the appropriate time to repair the yard depends on the climate in the region. Make sure the soil has warmed up enough so that the seeds could sprout and the shoots went into growth. To do this, the soil temperature should be at least 10 degrees Celsius.

Wait until the first trimming in this season. When the lawn turns green, you will know for sure that the grass has started to grow.

Determine The Cause Of The Poor State Of The Lawn

If you understand why the old lawn has dried up, you will not repeat your mistakes when repairing dead grass. Thus, if the vegetation cover has become scarce because of the growth of trees that shield the lawn from the sun and compete with it because of water and nutrients, then the shade-loving grass varieties should be used. It may be necessary to prune some twigs to open a lawn for rain and sun.

Remove The Weeds And Straw

Remove the weeds & straw

Start repairing with getting rid of weeding (especially evergreen) or remove them with herbicides. Now the new grass will not have to fight for light, water, and nutrients. When using herbicides, read the label carefully and follow the instructions. After using most of the products, DIY lawn repair can be done a week later. But some herbicides will not allow the seeds to sprout for another three to six weeks.

Check the amount of straw by lifting a tiny piece of vegetative cover with a shovel a few inches deep. If during compression, the spongy layer reaches a thickness of more than 2 cm, excess straw should be removed. If your lawn is more than 300 square meters, you may need an electric rake or a vertical lawn mower. For small lawns, a rake to remove straw manually is enough.

Preparing The Soil

In addition to removing the straw, a vertical lawn mower can be applied for sowing to prepare seed wells. Mow the entire area of the yard by immersing the mower’s feet to a depth of about 3 to 12 mm. Then collect the garbage from the surface using rakes.

Soil Preparing

You can also prepare the soil for planting and restoring dead grass is to conduct intensive aeration. In this case, aerate the whole lawn 3–5 times to ensure the necessary aeration. But, the best result is guaranteed by combining both methods – aeration and removal of straw by a vertical lawn mower. This will greatly make the circulation of water supplying seeds and shoots better.

A typical problem with the damaged lawn repair is too thick or too hard soil, as a result of which oxygen and water cannot penetrate to the plant roots, which leads to a slowing of growth. The aerator is great at creating water and air holes in the soil, while a vertical lawn mower cuts out the plant cover increasing the amount of grass and making the lawn look better.

Watering The Lawn

Seeds and shoots of grass for active growth and rooting require water. Soil should be rather moist. If the lawn is dry to the touch and the rain is not expected in the near future, begin to create water reserves in the soil a few days before seeding dead grass. To do this, turn on the sprinkler for a couple of hours a day.

Lawn Watering

It’s very important to evenly water the grass. With even watering and sufficient soil temperature, a proper effect is easily achieved.

Using Fertilizers

Fertilizers contribute to the growth and strengthening of new seeds and seedlings. Fertilizers should be applied immediately before sowing. Use slow-acting nitrogen fertilizers. Having tested the soil, you’ll learn if you need to additionally make nitrogen and potassium and how to repair a patchy lawn effectively.

Choosing The Right Fertilizer

How To Reseed Existing Lawn – Sowing

If your lawn is in a more or less normal state, use the same mixture of grass seeds as before. Soil testing will also show you which seeds are best to apply so that you could know how to repair dead grass and refresh your yard.

Lawn Sowing

Sowing can be done manually, however, to distribute the seeds evenly, it is better to use a seeder.
